About SU
SU was established in 2003, initially with two faculties: Agriculture and Education; and there were only about 35 academic and administrative staff. By 2019, SU has 6 faculties, including (1) Education, (2) Languages, (3) Engineering, (4) Architecture, (5) Agriculture and Forest Resources, and (6) Economics and Tourism. There are 27 bachelor degree programmes for the ~4,500 students each year. There are 98 administrative staff who are working in 10 different offices. About 428 academic staff are responsible for teaching and conducting academic research.
Key activities in academic training and research on forests and related natural resources
Approximately 650 students graduate each year from the Faculty of Agriculture and Forest Resources (FAF), however there are only Bachelor-level courses currently on offer, only one of which is specifically related to forests (plantations).

- ADB – Asia Development Bank SHEP, strengthening higher education to upgrade staff capacity, small fund for research, produce text book (no material support), scholarships to any country of selected universities (including in EU).

In the last few years, SU has been involved with capacity building activities with UH, including cooperation/participation in CIMO’s HEI-ICI & NSS program.

FRAME involvment
SU will work closely with UH and CMU to develop and implement the “Forest restoration and rural livelihoods” academic focal area as well as supporting the implementation of WP1 Preparation, WP4 Dissemination. SU will coordinate and host 2 capacity building activity in Luang Prabang. SU will be responsible for selecting their staff to join the relevant capacity building activities and academic staff exchange to UH and CZU. SU will have one representative sit on the Executive Management Committee (EMC) and the Academic Advisory Board (AAB). SU is responsible for its own MSc programme accreditation process which is managed by the AAB in liaison with the Ministry of Education and Sport.
