Organized by the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Sciences, Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, Czech Republic in cooperation with the Savannakhet University, Savannakhet, Lao PDR
The intensive course aimed to provide profound knowledge on topics that deal with wood sciences and wood technology needed for the processing of timber into wooden products. The course dealt with the wood structure and properties related to wood processing, explained the basics of mechanical wood processing and sawmilling, chemical wood processing and wood protection, and showcased multiple wood applications and management, including the terminal energy use of wood. The course included a field trip to a wood processing facility nearby the Savannakhet University premises.
Upon completion of the courses, the participants are able to identify the critical problems in each subject, use basic analytic methods to research the problems, and synthesize and propose a solution to said problems, considering the regional and legal issues that are specific to the country for which the solution is developed. The course was aimed at developing key skills of Thai and Lao HEI staff who study the problem of production forests and teach subjects related to the optimization of the production function in natural forests and plantations. In other words, the course was aimed at young and driven participants from Savannakhet University, Souphanouvong University, Kasetsart University, and Chiang Main University who focus on silviculture or forest harvesting and raw timber production in the tropics.
